DHLPPC

The DHLPPC vaccination protects against the following:

  • Distemper

Distemper is a virus related to the measles virus in people. It causes two diseases in dogs. The first is an upper respiratory infection, with thick, crusty discharge from the eyes and nose. The virus is shed in the mucous and passes from dog to dog from the sneezing and coughing of an infected dog. In some dogs, it can cause a neurological infection, which will appear as tremors or seizures. Either form is highly fatal. Fortunately, the vaccination is 100% affective when done properly.

  • Hepatitis

Hepatitis is a liver disease caused by a virus. It is spread in body fluids including urine, saliva, and feces. It can be picked up through the mouth or nose. It is usually fatal. Fortunately, the vaccination is 100% affective when properly done.

  • Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a kidney and liver disease caused by a spirochete. It is shed primarily in the urine and can infect standing pools of water. It is highly contagious to people, and it could be fatal in both species. Vaccination is very effective.

  • Parainfluenza

Parainfluenza is a respiratory disease caused by a virus. It is one of the causes of kennel cough. It is spread from the nose and mouth by sneezing, coughing, barking, and breathing.

  • Parvo

Parvo is an intestinal disease caused by a virus. Vomiting and diarrhea progress to GI bleeding and death.

  • Corona

Corona is an intestinal disease caused by a virus. Clinically, it appears the same as parvo (above). The vaccination is 100% effective.

Tracheobronchitis (Bordetella)

Tracheobronchitis is a vaccination that prevents kennel cough caused by the bacteria bordetella bronchiseptica. It is spread through the air from dogs barking and coughing. It is highly contagious to other dogs. It is an injectable vaccination that is boostered annually that provides general immunity. Both this vaccine and the intranasal bordetella are against the same bacteria. Both forms should be given.

Rabies

Rabbies is a virus that attacks the brain and central nervous system, causing paralysis, seizures, and death. It is contagious to humans and other animals. Two vaccines are available at Baker Veterinary Clinic: A 1-year and a 3-year. The first vaccination, regardless of the age of the animal, must be boostered in 1 year, even if you use the three year vaccine.  The vaccination is 100% effective when properly done.
